欢迎大家来参加我的新书首发式。其实，如果可能，我很想邀请所有与长城文物相关的人，包括我的书中51件文物的制作者们。

我想请的最老的一位是2年前的无名之辈。他生活在蒙古国东部草原上，是一个见识过游牧部落相互厮杀的铜镜制作者。

我还想请最富盛名的史学家司马迁。他在公元前年，奔赴过长城沿线，在他的巨著《史记》中描述了这座长万里的军事工程。如果今天他也能带着《史记》，到这里来签售，估计要用几辆卡车装载他的书。因为那时人们是在竹子或木头上写字。

如果所有文物的制作者和参与者都能够到场，那么他们至少来自4个千禧年间、代表15个世纪、说10种不同的语言，从事35种不同的职业！最年轻的参与者就在这里，他是我的小儿子，托马斯.林赛，小名汤米，今年15岁，出生于年。

我之所以这样说，那是因为，在启动50件文物项目之前，我曾打印出一个文物清单。汤米见我试图寻找文物和故事之间的关系和排列顺序，他给我出了一个好主意。他给每一件文物都做了“名片”。
Hemadethename-cards,andwebeganshufflingthemaroundonthefloor,matchingupthosewiththesimilarfunctions,thesamematerials,obviouslikenesses,adjacentages--andsometimesputtingverycontrastingobjectstogether.Pairsformed,objectslinedup,andgraduallyapossiblestorylineemergedas‘GroupChats’ofvariouskindsbegantomaterialize.
我开始用他制作的文物“名片”，把文物与文物进行对比、排列、调换、组合。功能相同的、材料相似的、时代接近的摆放在一起；有时也把对比强烈的文物搁在一处。于是，在我家的地板上，这些文物卡片，一对对、一行行、一组组，一目了然。它们形似今天的“群聊”。
